MBA screen brightness issue

Hi,
I'm having an odd issue with Slackware64 14.2 on my mid-2013 Macbook Air. When I change the screen brightness after waking up the computer from sleep below 90%, the screens backlight is instead disabled, and the screen fades to black.
I am using KDE 4.14.32
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
