Kingsbury discusses costly 1st-half timeout: 'That's on me'
Following a close loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury took full responsibility for his costly first-half timeout that likely affected the outcome of the game.
The 49ers went for it on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line with four seconds remaining in the second quarter. Arizona's defense came up with a clutch stop, but Kingsbury already called a timeout. The 49ers scored on their next try.
"I wanted to get a Kodak timeout, one of those looks at it," Kingsbury told reporters, according to Kevin Zimmerman of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. "Wanted them to hopefully burn their best play. Looking back on it, would have rather gotten that stop.
"That one didn't work out for us and that's on me."
The Cardinals dropped to 3-5-1 following the loss but gave the undefeated 49ers their closest game to date in 2019.
"We're a good football team," wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald said. "We feel as though we could beat that team today, the penalties and missed opportunities, those are on us.
"Fortunately we'll be able to see this team in two weeks."
