The San Francisco 49ers announced that linebacker Kwon Alexander suffered a torn pectoral Thursday night against the Arizona Cardinals.

An MRI confirmed the injury Friday and Alexander will miss the remainder of the 2019 season as a result.

The 25-year-old signed a four-year, $54-million contract with San Francisco this offseason, making him the NFL's fifth-highest paid linebacker in terms of average annual value.

Alexander thrived in the middle of the stout defensive unit in 2019, helping the 49ers reach the midway point of the campaign undefeated. He accumulated 34 tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble across eight starts.

The torn pectoral marks the second straight season ended by injury for the young defender. In 2018, his final year with the Tamp Bay Buccaneers, Alexander tore his ACL in Week 7.

San Francisco will move forward with Fred Warner, Azeez Al-Shaair, and rookie Dre Greenlaw at linebacker.
