Report: Cowboys not close to Prescott deal, franchise tag likely

The Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott didn't make significant progress on a long-term contract during the team's bye week, and now a franchise tag is possible, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

"At this point in the season, with a tag looming, it's hard to imagine a new deal getting done," Rapoport writes.

Prescott is reportedly seeking a contract that pays him $40 million per season, and the Cowboys are also negotiating a new deal with receiver Amari Cooper.

"Could Dallas tag Prescott and then transition tag Cooper? In the final year of the collective bargaining agreement only, they can. Time will tell how they handle it," Rapoport adds.
