Unable to boot/log in after ubuntu update on Lenovo thinkpad T480s

Hi there,
I tried to update my Ubuntu version on my Lenovo Thinkpad T480s over night and when I came back in the morning, the system didn't boot properly. It gets stuck with a purple screen and I am not able to log in. I tried to go into the grub menu and boot it in recovery mode which gave me an error message saying: kernel panic, unable to mount root fs on unknown block.
Any ideas on how to solve the issue or go back to the older version? I am also slightly concerned about my data, is there a way to save it before trying to reinstall another version or shouldn't it be a problem?
I attached pictures of the grub menu and the error message for clarification and please let me know if you need further information. Any help is highly appreciated!
