booting from usb on a win 10 machine

i have followed these instructions here https://www.lifewire.com/create-uefi...nt-usb-2202084
when i look at my usb it has an efi directory with a boot directory in that which conains a couple of .efi files.
when i restart my machine holding down shift to access the boot menu. my usb is pluged in an i select boot from removable device and the machine just boots back to windows
