No colours in Thunderbird

Apologies if this has already been dealt with, but since upgrading to Ubuntu 18.04 I'm unable to specify text or background colours in Thunderbird.
I can choose a colour from the selection offered, or type my own hex codes, but the text remains dark grey on a light grey background, and choosing some colours causes the text size to change.
