is windows emulating left click?

on my laptop there is a touch pad with 2 embedded buttons left and right click.
on windows I can use these buttons hence can switch off tap to click
I've just installed mint 19.2 and it doesn't recognise my left and right buttons. I have to use tap to click and it's driving me insane
is windows emulating left click and right click with these buttons? and can I make mint do a left click when I press the touch pad left button?
