Weird issue with email

Not sure where to post this...
Has any one else noticed that sometimes when you take what you think is a unique username to a new email account, you find that it's already taken?
This has never happened to me the FIRST time I've used a new email username, but if I then try to use that name somewhere else later, it's now already taken.
Here's what I mean - I'd like to use the same email as a login everywhere, but I want to use a non-identifying username. So I come up with a username, go to somewhere and create an account. All fine and dandy.
Within a day or 2, that new username will show up "taken" nearly everywhere.
And having a consistent username goes out the window.
I've tried this now with 2 really wonky-ass names, and by the 3rd or 4th site, the name is gone.
Is this about some kind of whacko "mail bot" ??
