Installing Linux on Portable USB drive.

Hello to all - I am a newbie, but do know a little about Linux having Linux Mint installed a short time ago. Wanting to re-install.
My question to you is this: Can I install and run a Linux OS from a portable USB drive instead of my hard drive. Is it worth it..speed wise.
