The Detroit Lions have placed quarterback Matthew Stafford on injured reserve, ending any chance of a return before the end of the season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Stafford hasn't played since Nov. 3 because of tiny fractures in his back. The 31-year-old had been adamant about trying to play again before the end of the year.

Stafford was enjoying one of his finest seasons before the injury derailed his campaign. He threw for 2,499 yards with 19 touchdowns and five interceptions in eight games, averaging a career-high 8.6 yards per pass attempt.

The Lions are 0-6 since losing Stafford.
