Collector? Is this a security risk?
by Soadyheid from LinuxQuestions.org on (#4WSZQ)
Booting my system up this morning (Mint 18.3) the disk seemed to be busier than normal and my GKrell monitor showed a lot of activity. Running "top" showed something called "collector" was hogging the CPU.
Googling "What is Collector in Linux" gave an answer that it was a Java program that collected logs and sent them to Sumo, whoever they are. (Other destinations were available.) Googling Sumo gets: Quote:
My questions are:
1.) Is this collector something I should be worried about? I'm not too keen on any metrics from my system being shipped off to someone particularly as I don't know what the information is likely to be used for.
2.) How did it get into my system? Have I clicked on something I shouldn't have? Is it part of a Java update?
3.) Why on earth would some company want to analyse my machine?
Thanks for your input.
Play Bonny!
