Where did I go wrong? And is it recoverable? LFS mashing up the resident distro
by chrislewis79 from LinuxQuestions.org on (#4X241)
Using lite 3.8 on a 32 bit celeron. Lenovo T60 laptop from 2007.
Been working well through LFS all the the way to and correctly completing chapter 6.52. I have been switching off between sessions as time is tight. This seems to have worked well so far. I think I missed a user change, or a chroot on restarting. Now I have the following problem:
Resident distro boots nicely to the splash screen. Then goes blank. All the Alt-F keys open a tty except 7. I can't login as me "no password set" or as the 'lfs' user. I can log in as root. once logged in as root I can start X with Xinit. But it is a completely different desktop appearance. Not sure how to describe it but it does not look like the normal lite interface, it has a little gecko (not like the suse one) in the top left corner, and a bar in the center middle like a mac, but all the apps I am used to. Is this just cos I am logged it as root?
So I think I have done something to the passwords with one of the password setting instructions in LFS.
I don't know why it goes black after the splash screen - is it because I have totally mashed the user accounts and the login screen cannot run with such a mashsed up account?
Once I re- mounted the partition with all the directories, I could see the LFS directories as created, but when I chroot they disappear. ???? -Not sure what I am doing - fill me in - what should I be reading?
Is there a way of repairing the oringinal users so it boots to login, and I can carry on or do I have to start LFS again? I there a formal way of 'stopping' the LFS process before shutdown and re-preping before continuing?
Thanks
