Which distributions run on the old IBM ThinkPad T42, Type 2373-CTO?

At the time of installation, the laptop will have 2 GB RAM and an empty NTFS-formatted 40 GB hard drive that is allowed to be formatted any way the installer chooses. I can insert a USB thumb drive into the laptop (but probably not boot from it) and inserts CDs (and probably boot from the CDs, but I cannot burn more than two because my CD supply is limited).
Any positive or negative experiences with distributions that could be installed and would still run on that laptop? In particular, any experiences on installing Debian using their netinst (i386) iso file?
The laptop should be usable for basic text processing and for some rudimentary internet access (at least for the purpose of installation).
