Screen tearing AFTER closing game on steam

I use NVIDIA drivers Xorg KDE
When I play a game in steam (not sure if its to do with proton or games built for linux, its hit or miss) I can play the game just fine - however once I close the game out, if I open an application such as firefox and every future application the screen will flicker for a few seconds
The only "fix" is to restart sddm (display manager)
Is there a fix I am missing here?
