Several attempts. Mint or Ubuntu will not install.

I'm a Linux noob trying to install on my old laptop that is still running fine. A Sagar NP8960 (2010). I Would like to turn it into a Win 10/Linux dual boot. I thought I was experienced enough to to it alone, but unfortunately, all efforts to load Ubuntu, or Mint have failed. (Win 10 Runs fine)
What I've done so far:
I made a USB Mint boot on a 4gig stick, a Mint boot on a USB 128gb SSD, and USB Ubuntu on 4gb, and 128gb sticks.
Mint on the SSD got no where and hung. USB Mint got to install choices then hung after selecting "Install mint...." It began processing then hung. Other Mint attempts did the same or gave lots of errors.
Ubuntu loads and I get to a desktop to select network, etc. Unfortunately, though it accepts text from the keyboard, each letter takes seconds to register on screen. Track pad and mouse do not work.
I've done several attempts, made the USBs using both Rufus 3.8, and Universal USB. I've used Ubuntu 18.04 and LinuxMint 19.3-Cinnamon. Is there some Mouse/trackpad driver that Ubuntu needs that is missing? Some Bios setting I need to change?
This machine came with Vista, upgraded to both Window 7 and Windows 10 easily. (I clean installed both eventually with no problems) It was my 3D modeling work machine for years. (AutoCAD, Rhino, Sketchup) I was hoping to make it a Linux creation machine with Blender, Inkscape, FreeCad, etc.
Since, Mint and Ubuntu will not install. Linux it seems, is more problematic than I was led to believe. As a last try before I abandon this, does anyone think creating a DVD install disk might work better? The machine does have a working DVD drive. Should I try an older version of Ubuntu? (Not 18.04)
