Cowboys officially move on from Garrett as head coach
The Dallas Cowboys officially announced Sunday that head coach Jason Garrett won't be retained beyond the 2019 season.
"We are extremely grateful to Jason Garrett for his more than 20 years of service to the Dallas Cowboys as a player, assistant coach, and head coach," team owner Jerry Jones said in a statement, according to team writer David Helman.
Despite being told he won't be retained, the 53-year-old continued to ask Dallas to consider his candidacy moving forward. The longtime boss' contract expires Jan. 14.
Garrett posted an 85-67 record after taking over for Wade Phillips on an interim basis in 2010. The Cowboys have made the playoffs three times under his watch, falling in the divisional round in each appearance.
Dallas has reportedly interviewed Mike McCarthy and Marvin Lewis for the vacancy.
