In the last couple of years, Microsoft has taken a multi-platform approach to games developed in-house, releasing them simultaneously on Xbox and PC. Now it seems that Sony is starting to lean in that direction. A second previously PlayStation-exclusive title heads for PC this year: ir?t=techreport09-20&l=alb&o=1&a=B076BJ7Horizon Zero Dawn.

According to a report from Kotaku's Jason Schreier, multiple sources "familiar with Sony's plans" have the company selling the game on Steam and Epic's PC storefronts.

Horizon Zero Dawn, developed for PlayStation 4 by Guerrilla Games, is an open-world action game set in a post-post-apocalyptic version of the United States overrun by mechanical versions of familiar animals. You play as a character named Aloy; she battles and hunts these mechanical beasts while searching for clues about her past.

There's a logical progression here worth noting. Another currently-exclusive title, Kojima Productions' Death Stranding, is headed to PC this summer. Both Kojima Productions and Guerilla Games developed their games using Guerrilla Games' Decima Engine. The work that Kojima Productions is doing to port the game will likely make the port of Horizon Zero Dawn significantly less difficult.

Does Horizon Zero Dawn on PC signal a change at Sony?

This could be Sony toying with the idea of making its games available on PC; could we see games like God of War and Spider-Man on the PC as well? Just a few weeks ago, Sony announced its exclusive baseball franchise, MLB The Show, would expand beyond the PlayStation platform. Kotaku also notes that studio Quantic Dream self-published PlayStation titles Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human on PC, too. It could also be that games on the Decima engine are particularly well-suited to ports. We may not see this go beyond those two games.

If this is the beginning of something, though, it would be a big shift in philosophy for Sony. The console maker has formerly held tight to its exclusives as one of the biggest reasons to buy its PlayStation consoles. For those of us with ample rigs, though, that means that gorgeous games like Horizon Zero Dawn can look even better. We'll likely see higher frame rates on Horizon Zero Dawn, to start. Lighting and textures befitting modern gaming PCs could follow, too.
