Linux on external harddisk suitable for HP UEFI and ACER BIOS laptop

I would like to know how I can install Linux (Mint 19.3) on a external harddisk so that i can use this disk with my HP laptop UEFI and with my ACER laptop BIOS.
I made a bootable USB stick on my Acer BIOS laptop. This USB stick works well on the Acer BIOS and HP laptop and can use live linux on both laptops.
When i install Linux on the external harddisk with a USB drive in my ACER, linux doesnt boot from the HP UEFI laptop but it does from the ACER BIOS laptop.
I cant install linux on the external disk with the USB stick in the HP laptop, because the installation will stop because wireless doesnt work.
Just ask myself why on the HP laptop the USB stick works well, but the external disk not.
Who can help me out?
