The Houston Texans have named Anthony Weaver their new defensive coordinator, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Weaver will replace longtime assistant Romeo Crennel, whose contract is up soon and he wasn't expected to return as the Texans' DC. Crennel could retire or become a senior assistant, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport reported.

Weaver, 39, has been Houston's defensive line coach since 2016. He previously worked with the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and Cleveland Browns in the same capacity.

Crennel's tenure in Houston started in 2014, and he spent time as the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. Crennel is a five-time Super Bowl champion as an assistant, winning two rings with the New York Giants (1986, 1990), and three with the New England Patriots (2001, 2003, 2004).

The 72-year-old has also logged NFL head coaching experience. He was the Cleveland Browns' sideline boss from 2005 to 2008 before moving on to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he worked as both the team's defensive coordinator (2010-11) and head coach (2011-12). The Lynchburg, Virginia native has posted a 28-55 career head coaching record.

The 10-6 Texans allowed 24.1 points and 388.3 yards per game in 2019, which ranked 19th and 28th in the league, respectively.
