Cannot use Secondary Display connected to Laptop in Linux Mint

Hi,
I cannot use a secondary display in Linux Mint. It is a Dell monitor connected to my Samsung Laptop, however the Display settings only give me the option of making the monitor my "primary" and not option is given to make it a "secondary" display. Please can someone help??
