Persistent Memory

I want to make a USB Flash Drive for a friend who wants to try Linux. I have Mint. What Boot software is available for Linux. On Windows I used Rufus and LiveLinux. Then how do I make one with persistent memory? I selected that option in Rufus and the other ones I used but it did not work. So how can I make sure it's done right this time. Thanks.
