What you need to know
  • Supposed live image of the P40 Pro has leaked showing off the bezel-free display on the front.
  • The image also confirms the pill-shaped cutout for the dual selfie cameras that we've seen in renders previously.
  • The P40 Pro will be the next big flagship to launch from Huawei without Google apps and services.

The P40 Pro is Huawei's next big flagship set to launch in March 2020 at an event in Paris. Leading up to the event, we've seen several renders of the new premium phone leak out, but now we're getting our first potential live look at the device.

The image comes to us from Slashleaks, and shows the front of the P40 Pro in all its glory. As previous renders have already revealed, the P40 Pro will feature a pill-shaped cutout in the upper left corner with two selfie cameras.

However, the real show stopper here is the insanely thin bezels on the device. You can barely see the thin strips of black at the top and bottom of the phone, while there are no side bezels at all due to the waterfall display design.

As with all leaks, it's important to take this one with a huge grain of salt. Although, this bezel-free design would align with what Huawei CEO Richard Yu said back in December about the P40 Pro featuring a design that consumers have never seen before.

Unfortunately, we don't get a look at the back, but if the previous renders are accurate, the P40 Pro will feature five cameras housed in a large rectangle camera bump. We don't currently know any other details about the camera setup, but we do expect the P40 Pro to be powered by the latest Kirin 990 5G chipset offering stellar performance.

As beautiful and powerful as the P40 Pro may be at launch, it will still be marred by Huawei's current standings with the U.S. government. Most notably, the lack of Google apps. Yu has already revealed that the P40 Pro will run Android 10 sans Google apps. Instead, the phone will ship with Huawei Mobile Services, the company's replacement for Google Play Services.

That could be a deal-breaker for many of you out there. Such was the case for the Mate 30, where in the review, we said, "This is an incredible smartphone that would be a great buy if it had Google services."
