anyone using multiple monitors give opinions please because i just do not know

i have an nvidia k5000 four port video card. four displays standing left to right same height. when i first powered on the machine all four displays had the same image( was mostly determining that my (at the time) very expensive video card still worked.) it did. powered off just the displays. next day powered on the displays and only the right-most display showed the output the others went to power saving i guess for lack of input signal. login after a lq.org forum post ran the script for the liunx driver version etc. now the left-most display shows output and right three go to power saving.

now for the question...
is there software i can configure so i can use all four displays in a command line set up with no x window software on the machine? has anyone tried?
are multiple displays only possible because of the x windows graphics libraries?
also how can a desktop span 4 displays.
