14.2/x86_64/Xfce4: GUI fonts no longer display clearly
by rshepard from LinuxQuestions.org on (#4Z7MV)
I work on HP 19" monitors with 1280x1024 resolution. Last week I added a couple of LaTeX fonts to /usr/share/fonts/TTF and /usr/share/fonts/OTF and now the fonts in GUI applications such as LyX and gkrellm as well as all web sites in firefox are difficult to read because the letter stroke are not of the same width and the lines appear as adjacent dots rather than vector strokes.
I ran mkfontscale, mkfontdir, and fc-cache for both the TTF and OTF subdirectorys in /usr/share/fonts.
Not all installed fonts are available in firefox Edit -> Preferences -> Fonts. I keep trying to find one that provides the clarity I used to have but so far without success.
I've tried searching the web for fonts that display clearly at the monitor's default resolution but my search strings find only references to web browsers, text and GUI.
Why the display changed when new fonts were added is a puzzle to me, but regardless of reason I need to find a solution. All suggestions, recommendations, and other ideas are welcome.
