Nvidia reveals Cyberpunk 2077-themed RTX 2080 Ti
After a short tease, Nvidia revealed this week its newest special edition video card: The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti "Cyberpunk 2077 Edition." Whether or not you think this game-themed Nvidia RTX card looks cool, though, you can't have one; Nvidia is only producing 200 of these special-edition cards, and the company says they aren't selling any of them.
The Cyberpunk 2077-edition GeForce RTX 2080 TiThe company is giving away 77 of the 200 cards through an official sweepstakes that has entrants reposting a social media post and tagging a friend. Winners will get one of the cards, and so will the friend they tag. I'm not sure what they're going to do with that 77th card. The other cards, Nvidia says, are will go to "community and charity promotions run either by GeForce or other partners to honor the loyalty and dedication of our community and celebrate the awesomeness of Cyberpunk 2077 and PC gaming on GeForce." A few will also be reserved for team members and 'deserving development partners.' Presumably, these cards will go out in time for the September release of Cyberpunk 2077.
Nvidia says the card is valued at $1,100. Aside from the shroud, it appears to be a bog-standard GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with all the specs that come with that. The shroud itself is a piece of AL5052 aluminum slapped with a coat of Cyberpunk-yellow paint, and it'll come in a Cyberpunk-themed box. The yellow shroud may be too gaudy for some, but Bumblebee fans are sure to dig it.
It's admittedly a little disappointing that this card is an RTX 2080 Ti. On the bleeding-edge side of things, Ampere cards are most likely right around the corner, and by the time Cyberpunk 2077 hits, they'll likely be on shelves. If they had to go with Turing, you'd think they would go for an RTX 2070 so they could call the card an RTX 2077 in all their press materials.
Ray-tracing is growingThe library of RTX-enabled games is growing fast; Games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, and Control are already on the market. Older titles like Quake II and Minecraft are showing what raytracing can do for older games.
Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the biggest games to promise RTX enhancement. Other upcoming RTX-powered games include Dying Light 2 and Watch Dogs Legion. It's worth noting that both of those games have been recently delayed; it's possible that a feature like raytracing could slip if things are stumbling enough.
If you're looking to enter, the sweepstakes goes through February 28, 2020.
