How to change my version of vim to support syntax colour

I have recently installed MX 18.3. The version of vim I have installed does not support syntax highlighting. I tried to change my .vimrc file to support it, with the line: syntax on. But when I run vim I get the following message:
Error detected while processing /home/user/.vimrc
line 4:
E319: Sorry, the command is not available in this version: syntax on
Press ENTER or type command to continue
I like how it says sorry. I have looked on the vim website, and can't seem to find any answers. When I run vim --version, sure enough it lists the features of my package, and syntax has a '-' sign next to it. Is there any way I can upgrade my vim to accept syntax highlighting?
Thanks.
PS: I've notice that other posts have terminal output in a kind of blue box. How do I do this?latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=EFzJtMYi9ds:9ifWKLmQOnA:F7zBnMy latest?i=EFzJtMYi9ds:9ifWKLmQOnA:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=EFzJtMYi9ds:9ifWKLmQOnA:gIN9vFwEFzJtMYi9ds
