Twitter blows up as Leafs lose to emergency goalie David Ayres
Warning: Story contains coarse language
Nothing brings the sports world together quite like an emergency goalie in the NHL.
As expected, Twitter users had a field day when 42-year-old Zamboni driver David Ayres was forced to enter Saturday's game for the Carolina Hurricanes against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Rod Brind'Amour looks like he's going to hurl. Nino in the emergency goalie's ear joking around with him, trying to calm him down on this crazy stage. Amazing drama for a team that needs the points

Ayres' wife was obviously quite nervous for her husband.

As the Hurricanes continued to control the game with Ayres between the pipes, the tune on social media changed to disbelief that the Leafs actually lost to their minor-league Zamboni driver.
If the Leafs lose this game, it had to be the most embarrassing in franchise history. Has to be.

Ayres has more wins in Toronto than I do smh

Leafs allow two goals in first four minutes of 3rd and now trail 6-3.

No Hamilton. No Pesce. Both starting goalies out and Hurricanes are protecting their emergency goalie.
Leafs are 0-for-2 in PP against Ayres.

Imagine spending all that money on star forwards & then not scoring on a PP against the emergency goalie

I'm out of jokes. This is a tragedy. How much passion the Canes have playing in front of a goalie they met at the intermission vs. how much the Leafs showed playing for each other. Sad.

Carolina won the game 6-3, outshooting Toronto 49-26.
