help demystifying LVM and mdadm RAID 1 partitions

I currently have a two 6TB disk RAID 1 system hosting some LVM partitions. after coming across the recommendation from the Slackware install disk of leaving about 100MB free on the RAID partitions I decided to do just that by first resizing the Physical Volume in LVM to about 4.5TB and then resizing the RAID array to 5TB. the Logical Volumes were nowhere near the 4.5TB mark so I didn't need to resize any of those. now that the RAID array is set to 5TB I proceeded with removing one of the two disks from the array and then resizing /dev/sda1 using gparted, but it won't let me resize at all. did I miss a step here?

to make matters a little more hairy, I actually had set up the RAID array in degraded mode with only one disk at first (/dev/sda1 - fully maximizing the space on the drive). prior to adding the second disk to the array I had /dev/sdb partitioned with 100MB free. now I just want to get both partitions to match, but after removing either drive from the RAID array I'm not able to resize. any suggestions?latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=kzkq0coDMCw:M9mLuCge7Fc:F7zBnMy latest?i=kzkq0coDMCw:M9mLuCge7Fc:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=kzkq0coDMCw:M9mLuCge7Fc:gIN9vFwkzkq0coDMCw
