Suddenly can't connect to the 'net
by FTIO from LinuxQuestions.org on (#4ZZ7Z)
Hey gang,
I'm severely stressed at the moment. I'm in the process of moving and living on a tiny disability check is making me worry if I'll be able to pay all the bills next month *and* get the electricity started in the new place. I *must* be literally out of this house by the 4th of March or I will be on the street.
That said, I get on the computer this morning and suddenly find I can't connect to the 'net.
All was working fine last night at 10PM when I went to sleep.
I normally have my system go through my router and then the cable modem. Of course first thing(s) I did were to reboot the router, which didn't help, then pulled the power on the cable modem and plugged it back in, which also didn't help.
Next, I call the cable company and they check things on their end and can't find anything wrong. They naturally asked what OS I use and naturally they don't support Linux (I *did* try to get online with my Slackware 14.1 x86, while I'm normally using this system of Slackware 14.2 x86_64).
By the way I was *not* able to get online with 14.1 either.
So, I hooked up my older-than-dirt laptop with Windows 7 and with the network cable from the computer straight to the modem, it gets online just fine.
When I tried the same thing with both Slackware systems - the cable straight to the modem, skipping the router - I still couldn't get online (I simply haven't set it up on the Windows system to use the router is all, that's why I didn't try it that way with the Windows).
When I have my normal system running (14.2 64 bit), and the network cable going to the router and then the modem, all I would get was 'unable to get to website' type messages when I opened a browser to try to go anywhere.
When I ran the cable straight from the computer to the modem, networkmanager would pop-up messages of how it's disconnected, then maybe five seconds later it would pop-up a message saying it was connected but not one second after that it would pop-up the disconnected message again, and it just keeps doing this over and over without end.
I'm at my wits end. I do an awful lot of my bill payments and such online and this new added stress is going to put me into a depression I am afraid I may not be able to dig myself out of.
If anyone has any ideas what I can try, I'd be extremely grateful. If you need any more information, please ask me what it is you need, as I'm no programmer and cannot remember commands for cli stuff very well (in case you need me to do something that way). Thanks guys, all help is appreciated, truly.
