Running out of memory
by Gordie from LinuxQuestions.org on (#501MG)
On my laptop I have been wrestling with a problem since the last updates I applied to current64. First, Plasma 5 is my choice of Desktop and so when I first encountered excessive ram use and a general non-responsive gui I thought my old computer can't handle kde anymore.
Interesting, I notice more and more memory being used until things jam up so I made a swapfile of 10G to add to the 8G already in my computer just to see if that might do the trick. No dice.
EDIT <The swapfile filled up and had to force reboot>
- Tried re-install of Plasma 5 but after a few hours things jam up and I have to force shutdown. Tried this twice, once with removing new files and next time overwriting all orig files with new.
Code:upgradepkg --reinstall --install-new- Tried re-install of current 64. Twice like above step. Same result. Things run slower until nothing works and I have to force a shutdown.
Code:upgradepkg --reinstall --install-newNow am back to using XFCE but nothing else changes so Plasma 5 may not be to blame at all
Now, since last night, this happens when choosing a desktop before startx. Not sure where to look or what to do. Link provided is to my Google-Drive where I have uploaded a picture of my screen.

I am confident that someone has had this experience and knows the solution.
