Starting with open-source programming

I want to improve my programming so I want to start open source coding. I have no experience with github and the git workflow. I understand python and java to some degree. I've looked at some open-source projects on github but all seem to complicated for me to get a handle on. Where do you think I should start. Should I look for programs to contribute or shall I start by learning the git workflow?
