[SOLVED] did something happen to ffmpeg and x264?

Blender will no longer make a movie it says "cannot configure encoder" images to a movie format , mpeg-4 x264 -- where I've never seen an issue before. now I am ..
I also am compiling ffmpeg (3.2.4) (slackbuils) with x264 option on.
installed on system
Code:ls /var/log/packages/ffmpeg*
/var/log/packages/ffmpeg-4.2.2-x86_64-1
$ ls /var/log/packages/x264*
/var/log/packages/x264-20170225-x86_64-1_SBoit is a step back,
just doing the one off slackbuilds.org to see if that will make it work. it is compiling right now. even though I am running current. ;)
