Seasonic’s 750W Connect power supply will untangle your build
While the computers of today would look like weird, futuristic sports cars to computer builders 30 years ago, those builders would still get to the power supply and see how little has changed. Aside from black metal modular cables, power supplies are still writhing squids of cabling that hide at the back of our computers and turn easy builds into messy headaches. Seasonic is looking to change that with its new 750-watt Connect power supply that it previewed back in 2018.
The Seasonic Connect is one of the biggest departures in PSU design I can ever remember seeing. It's still an ATX form-factor PSU, but it takes the idea of a modular PSU one step further. The heart of the PSU still sits in the exact same spot it would in your computer case. Instead of a tangle of cables, though, only one comes out, and it plugs into Seasonic's new "CONNECT device." This device then goes along the backplate of your case with some LED lighting to show it off. Then you can plug the cables you need into the fully-modular Connect module. As the image shows here, they're much shorter because they're all much closer to your devices.
Seasonic Connect SSR-750FA SpecsThe PSU is 80 PLUS Gold certified. The main housing of the PSU measures 140 mm x 150 mm x 86 mm. Seasonic doesn't list the dimensions of the Connect module, though photos show it running most of the height of a mid-tower chassis. The PSU runs with a 135-mm fluid-bearing fan that stays off until the PSU hits 40% load. The PSU also offers Micro Tolerance Load Regulation and can handle a multi-GPU setup. Seasonic rates the PSU itself at 150,000 hours to failure, though the fan at only 50,000 hours.
The whole package includes a loadout of shortened cables to match the new setup. The whole thing comes with a ten-year warranty.
Seasonic hasn't mentioned a price, but these are likely to be expensive unless they take off, so prepare your wallet. This is a really cool idea, and it's good to see more innovation in the power supply space. While they're definitely more efficient and more reliable, they're just as messy as they've ever been.
