For fun - turning my Windows7 laptop into a Linux machine

My early years, Unix was my only platform. To access EDA tools. Later, dragged kicking and screaming into Windows XP world with VPN access to Linux - still for access to EDA tools.
As my career evolved I did less and less work with EDA.
Now I have a brand new Windows10 laptop and a well-maintained Windows7 laptop that is obsolete. (Since mid January 'they' seem to have been making things quirky, I suspect.
Other than destroy and discard my Windows7 machine, which cannot be 'upgraded' to Windows 10, I could UPGRADE it to Linux.
But why?
When needed I can still access my clients' EDA tools via VPN.
So here's my question.
What do you Linux Forum people do with Linux? Serious hard-core computing, fun, or useful individual stuff?
Looking for ideas.
Thanks!
