Report: Teams expect Jones to become highest-paid DB in NFL history
Byron Jones is apparently set to break the bank in 2020.
Teams expect the pending free agent to get a contract worth $16 million-$18 million annually, which would make him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports.
Jones has spent his entire five-year career with the Dallas Cowboys, but he's expected to be priced out of their range as the team prioritizes new deals for Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper this offseason.
The 27-year-old Jones has just two career interceptions but offers elite athleticism, strong coverage skills, and the versatility a number of defensive coordinators value.
The New York Giants and New York Jets are reportedly among the teams targeting Jones this offseason. The cornerback has also been linked to the Philadelphia Eagles and Las Vegas Raiders.
Xavien Howard of the Miami Dolphins is currently the league's highest-paid defensive back, earning an average of $15.05 million a year on his current deal.
