Slackware64-14.2 and KDE: After Firefox upgrade, cannot launch with icon

I'm passing this along from my father, who is using KDE under Slackware64-14.2 on his desktop.

He wanted to upgrade to the latest Firefox supported by 14.2, so I described the process for him to wget the packages and use upgradepkg to install them.

That seems to have gone smoothly, but he can't launch the browser by clicking on KDE's Firefox icon. I'm not a KDE user, so I don't know how to advise him. Can someone make sense of his description of the problem, please, and suggest a remedy (and/or additional diagnostics)?

Here's the email he sent me (he lives three states away, so we mostly keep in touch via email):

Finally tried to upgrade Firefox. Everything went smoothly at the command line. Firefox downloaded and was upgraded. nss was downloaded and upgraded.

Started KDE gui and found the Firefox icon on the toolbar where it always has been. Clicked on same and watched the bouncing ball for what seemed to be longer than usual. And then nothing. The OS appears to have given up loading, the "tab indicator" along the bottom toolbar went away, and I was left with the desktop screen.

My guess is that I need to get a new icon for Firefox or I need to redirect the existing icon to the upgraded Firefox. I know you do not use KDE, so this is likely nonsense to you. If you know someone who uses KDE, I would appreciate some guidance.

Suggestions?
