Amazon acquired Twitch, the largest game-streaming site, back in 2014, making Amazon a significant player in the gaming ecosystem. Since then, the company has been working behind the scenes to expand its role in gaming. Amazon acquired Double Helix Games, a game studio in Irvine, California, in the same year, leading to the creation of an Amazon game studio in Irvine. Said game studio has been working on two massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, one of which is based on The Lord of the Rings. The studio's other game, New World, takes place in a fantasy setting based on an alternate version of the 17th century.

New World is set to launch in May alongside Crucible, a team-based sci-fi shooter developed by Relentless Studios, Amazon's primary game studio. Relentless Studios is located in Seatle, and its name hearkens back to the name Jeff Bezos originally considered for Amazon. A third Amazon game studio resides in San Diego, and is headed up by John Smedley, former president of Sony Online Entertainment (SOE), though no details are available on this studio's current project. Amazon's game studios are making use of Lumberyard, the company's own game engine.

Amazon is also working on its own cloud gaming service, currently dubbed "Project Tempo." Thus, Amazon joins Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, and possibly Valve out on the new digital frontier of cloud gaming. Amazon's own AWS cloud computing service gives the company an edge over some of the competition, but we'll have to wait and see how the cloud gaming wars play out.
