Virtualization, MIDI and Win 10 advice needed.

A question related to my considering running Win 10 in VMware player (or similar in Linux) rather than on bare iron as dual boot. I understand that I could run into a problem with regards to MIDI support, however the information doesn't seem to be very clear in this area...
My plan is to only use Win 10 for basic music production in a DAW (Bitwig Studio or Cakewalk by Bandlab), using both audio and MIDI input, but nothing particularly fancy.
I don't want to have to fiddle too much with VST DAW plugins designed to be run on Windows, in Wine.
Has anyone tried using a DAW with MIDI devices on Windows in virtualization? Will this work?
