Ubuntu 18.04 on MacBook Pro botched

I successfully installed Ubuntu on an old MBP (HD formatted so macOS completely wiped out). Covid-19 interrupted life and now I have not idea what the user password is. Is there a way to simply reinstall Ubuntu and start over? Or is there some key combination to get me in single-user mode? Thanks.
