Problem with keyboard input when using Idle

Lately, I have been having 2 problems:
1. When I start Idle, it does not always start. It thinks about it for a while, then stops. I try Idle again, and 2 Idle shells start.
2. When Idle is running, sometimes the keyboard is unresponsive. I cannot enter text, or I enter text which appears very slowly, as if it were an uplink to Mars.
Happened again, just now, while I'm toying with my latest Python script.
Then the screen kind of blinked and everything is normal again.
Is anyone else experiencing this kind of thing?
Any clues as to what it might be? This laptop dying??
