Grub menu

I can get into grub using nano /etc/default/grub
But after making changes, I can't get out. Ctrl' 0, don't work. There is no FILE save.
I do Ctrl x twice. I didn't want to install grub-commander but had to.
What am I doing wrong?
70 and trying to learn something new is foolish. But I'm starting to be unhappy with windows.
