A 23-year-old Toronto man has been charged in connection with the slaying of retired oral surgeon and philanthropist Paul Morgan.

Makoons Meawasige-Moore faces a charge of second-degree murder and will appear in court Monday morning, Toronto police said in a news release.

Morgan was found dead inside his home at 42 Howard Dr., near Leslie Street and Sheppard Avenue East, last week. Police did not disclose the cause of death except to say he had "obvious signs of trauma."

Friends described Morgan as an accomplished and skilled dental surgeon who devoted his life to helping the less fortunate. In 2012 he received the prestigious Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers for his contributions, particularly to the arts and sporting events involving First Nations communities and at-risk youth.

A close family friend told the Star last week that Morgan had an open-door policy at his two-storey North York home, and that police had been called in recent weeks because of trouble involving some of his house guests.

Meawasige-Moore is scheduled to make his first court appearance via teleconference from jail Monday morning.
