Report: Texans, Watson engaged in 'very preliminary' extension talks
The Houston Texans have started "very preliminary" talks with quarterback Deshaun Watson regarding a new contract extension, a source told ESPN's Ed Werder.
With left tackle Laremy Tunsil reportedly inking an NFL-record three-year, $66-million deal, the Texans' next priority is locking up their franchise passer, added Werder.
Watson became eligible for his first extension after completing his third NFL season.
The 24-year-old has established himself as one of the league's best quarterbacks and has led Houston to back-to-back division titles in two years as the team's full-time starter.
In 15 games last season, Watson threw for 3,852 yards and 26 touchdowns to 12 interceptions.
Russell Wilson currently tops all quarterbacks with $35 million per season, though Patrick Mahomes - who is also eligible for a new deal after finishing his third year - is widely expected to reset the market.
