upgrade to latest pre-release beta 20.04 screen rip?

I previously installed full install 2/2/2020 of ubuntu studio. I'd upgraded several times with no problems.
Recently, prior to 4/23 release, I ran into an Ncurses asking permission to install grub to efi. The 1st time I'd ran into this I denied, out of not knowing what would result. The 2nd time having not found any search result, with a newer beta I denied again but, ran into where X11 screen was torn-like and unusable. I restored from backup.
I then did a separate backup and tried the same, hoping to run across the Ncurses notice intent on allowing permission but, never again have I seen the question come up.
I don't know how to proceed. How can I get apt to ask me again for permission install grub to efi?
The current version is threw an unknown amount of upgrades, but hadn't to my remembrance come across this earlier. Though my memory is getting sketchy these days.
Sorry I don't have more but, I'll try to answer anything about my current os state. The computer I run is Dell I-15 3000 AMD A6 7TH GEN that came with Windows. Now it's ubuntu studio 20.04 with Windows (that I don't use and have no reason to take space for) running in VirtualBox.
Anyway so I've disabled the auto restore parts of it's bios, else it tries to restore to factory. HD I replaced with SSD. Memory upgraded. CD/DVD replaced with original HDD in CD/DVD bay insert.
