Wordpress on localhost

I am trying to help a friend with his website. I've never done this before, and I want to install WordPress on my Linux Mint 19.2 computer. Although I've been using Linux distros for over 20 years, I don't know much about the command line.
I followed the instructions, and was doing fine until the section Installing WordPress on the Localhost, section 4. I made the suggested changes to the form, and pressed Submit. Instead of the response shown at section 5, I received a response which said:
"Can't select database
"We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username and password is okay) but not able to select the wordpress database.
"Are you sure it exists?
"Does the user root have permission to use the wordpress database?
"On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your username, so it would be like username_wordpress. Could that be the problem?
"If you don't know how to set up a database you should contact your host. If all else fails you may find help at the WordPress Support Forums.
I have looked in the opt/lampp/htdocs/wordpress directory, but can't find a database. Should I look somewhere else?
I emailed the author of the instructions about six days ago, but have not yet received a reply.
Can someone help, please?
Please note: My current computer is HP Pavilion 24-r043a, not the one that's shown below. I'll update that in my profile.
