UPDATE: One arrested after assault call near Wentworth Street
A man was arrested Friday morning hours after police were called to a home near Hamilton's industrial north end for an assault that may have involved a firearm.
There was a large police presence in the neighbourhood at Munroe and Hillyard streets early May 1, including tactical officers from the emergency response unit and crisis negotiators. ERU forced the door open shortly after 7 a.m., said Const. Jerome Stewart.
Hamilton police were called shortly before 2 a.m. for an assault inside the corner-lot home. The victim, a woman in her late 20s, was already outside the home and had suffered minor injuries, he said, adding that the assault is not considered a domestic.
Preliminary information suggested there may have been a firearm involved in the incident," Stewart said.
This information led to police calling in tactical officers and incident comment, who secured the area. The suspect was alone inside the home.
There were no safety concerns so we were not rushing into the residence," he said.
There were some efforts to communicate with the man, but he did not come out on his own. So with the sun up and the area secure, officers forced the door open, Stewart said.
Police did not immediately search the home, but just crossed the threshold" and called for the man to come out. He complied and was arrested without incident.
The man, believed to be 30, is expected to face charges of assault and utter threats.
The incident remains under investigation by the criminal investigations branch.
