Xubunt 19,10 Microphone works in pulse audio but not in recording applications or or online

Firstly I found that my microphone doesn't work in Skype. I then checked in the pulse audio control and found that it was working there OK. I then tried a voice recorder and found that it wasn't working. Also I found an online test site. Again not working. I am using an hp 250 g7 laptop
