Apparently Inconsistent Misrecognition of USB stick with multiple Linux distros
by fredmyra from LinuxQuestions.org on (#549EW)
I am posting here as I could not identify a better option to fit my question with:
I have formatted a Kingston Data Traveller 3.0 usb stick as fat32 and copied several iso files with live versions of different Linux distros to it.
I created a map called boot, installed Grub to to the MBR and pointed the "boot" map as boot-directory.
I can boot to Grub menu from this usb stick in 2 different computers, a
FUJITSU SIEMENS [ ESPRIMO E7935, /D2828-A1, BIOS 6.00 R1.13.2828.A1, 03/19/2009 ]
and a
HP [ Probook 4510s,Core 2 Duo, T6570 ].
From there on I can boot some isos and can't boot many others, nothing new with this.
I cannot however boot to the GRUB menu in this usb with multiple Linux distros in 2 other computers: a
HP [Compaq 6715b KE067ET#AK8 /30C2, BIOS 68YTT Ver. F,08 03/04/2008]
and a
FUJITSU [ LIFEBOOK E743/FJNB265, BIOS Version 1.12 - 03/27/2018 ].
Both of these however can boot from several different usb sticks with only one iso placed by the dd command, even if the stick is a Kingston Data Traveller usb 3.0.
Sometimes the usb stick with multiple distros will be recognized by BIOS, before GRUB menu or Windows shows up (the Fujitsu Life book still has its original Windows), sometimes the computers will boot into some OS located at its HD without showing any signal of recognizing the USB.
Once booted into some OS both computers can read the usb stick with multiple distros.
I have googled and experimented with formatting the usb as ext4 and making sure to have 2 partitions on it, with no sucess.
In the past i have succeeded in solving similar situations by dd-ing from /dev/zero but here I have had no success - i used count=8 for dd and then created new msdos partition table in GParted.
The 2 computers boot directly to the GRUB menu on the HD, when i try to boot the usb stick in case. But they boot directly to the distros in dd-written usb sticks.
I have tried for a couple months to solve this problem on my own, or rather on "Google's own" but as said "no success".
So I am asking you guys if anyone recognizes any pattern here.
