Kdenlive transitions don't render properly

I'm on a fairly new install of Kubunto 20.04 and seem to have lot of issues with Kdenlive from stability issues (it randomly shuts off a lot) and even the final renders are often messed up. Lot of fade transitions just turn into green garbage, even though they look ok on preview. Here's an example:

Transition at around 3 minutes, instead of being a smooth fade, it's just this green crap. Seems to happen randomly, but if it happens, then rendering again, it does it again in same spot. So it's not like I can just keep rendering it until all the transitions are good.
Why is it doing this and is there a way to fix it? I posted on Kubuntu forums hoping it was a known bug or something but no one else is getting this issue.
